Inclusion & Learning Plan – Design & Technology
case study BACKGROUND
The assessment task investigates a case study of a student with a hearing disability, exploring strengths based characteristics of the student and his interests, background and disability. The learning environment, collaboration with support teams and his family, learning intentions and outcomes are investigated to determine a rationale for inclusive lesson planning which integrates Universal Design for Learning. The rationale addresses the teaching approach to address the students’ needs inclusively. Lesson plans, slides and content are included for my key learning area, Design & Technology. These assets are free to use with credit for non-profit and educational purposes. This assessment task is part of Inclusive Education: Principles and Practices 102746 subject, co-ordinated by Kerry Staples (2022) at Western Sydney University.
Inclusion & Learning Plan - Design & Technology
The plan explores the student’s strengths alongside the Stage 4 Design & Technology curriculum, as well as interpersonal skills, interests and obstacles. A social model of disability is engaged in investigating the student’s learning environment and participatory needs, focussing on support for universal design which includes all students. Collaborative efforts with professionals, families and the school is addressed to minimise obstacles for integration. Student directed projects, and multiple means of communication is integrated within the lesson material to ensure comprehension, comfort and equity in participation for all students. Various resources such as Google Slides with audio/visual/text materials, universal design lesson plans and project guides for self-pacing are used to assist with inclusive practice and provide students with supported, self-guided projects relevant to personal interest.

Social Inclusion Plan - support document
This social inlcusion support document has been designed and developed to assist colleagues (school staff) to support the student with social inclusion within the playground and school environment.

The resources from the Inclusion and Learning Plan is available below. This includes the 3 consecutive Stage 4 Design & Technology Lesson Plans which marks the initial stages of an interest-based Design Major Project. This is supported by lesson Google slides and a Project Guide Google Slide for scaffolding and for students to work at their own pace.
