Multi-modal presentation based on a fictional case-study to demonstrate Individual Education Intervention based on research.

Positive Learning Environments

This task is from the unit Pedagogy for Positive Learning Environments subject 102082 offered by Western Sydney University and co-ordinated by Dr. Roberto ParadaThis collaborative task involved creation and analysis of a vignette of a fictional student case study. The aim is to utilise contemporary psychological and educational theory, research and policies to engage with interventions to support the fictional student with their wellbeing and provide a positive learning environment for them to thrive.

The case study requires the student to be in a mainstream high school with the group members as their teacher. At least 3 areas of significant difficulties are experienced by the student within this case study.

  • Underperformance across a number school subjects (e.g., failing maths, English, etc.)
  • Reluctance to follow reasonable instructions from teachers (e.g., behavioural concerns)
  • Emotional regulation difficulties (e.g., mental health concerns)
  • Relational difficulties (e.g., bullying or peer pressure)
  • Significant social disadvantage (e.g., economic, home life, or minority linguistic, racial or religious group)
  • A medical condition which impacts on school functioning.

The issues are explored in the video followed by justifications for intervention plans.

Alex Vignette

Alex is a 15 year old non-binary student at a mainstream high school, from a conservative family, with a low socio-economic background. They struggle to focus on content, and become irritable when interrupted, and lashing out at peers and teachers, feeling bad after. Other students feel intimidated and don’t want to be around Alex. Feeling unfairly treated, Alex refuses to cooperate with teachers in class, becoming aggressive when faced with disciplinary action. This behaviour improves in creative classes which they enjoy. Alex spends a lot of time alone at school and at home. They don’t have many friends and are not close with their family.
